Anime Review: K

So this week's topic is K often called K project to make it easier to identify and search for.  We watched this in club last year and it was a hit so let's get down to business.  The basic premise of the series is following the main character Shiro as he becomes involved in a conspiracy amongst the seven Kings and their vassals.  Each King has powerful abilities which are granted to their followers which they use to pursue their own goals.

Shiro is a normal high school student until one day a video appears that shows him murdering one of the vassals of the Red King and claiming to be the new Colorless King.  In response to this video the Red King and his vassals, who are basically a street gang, begin hunting Shiro to avenge their fallen comrade.  Kurou, the vassal of the previous Colorless King arrives and protects Shiro claiming that he was instructed by his late lord to judge the next Colorless King and if he is unsuitable to kill him.  The story progresses from there as Shiro tries to understand his place in all of this knowing that depending on what is discovered Kurou might kill him.  The other subplot is a conflict between the Red and Blue Kings, who are a gang leader and a police chief respectively, and despite being natural enemies the comraderie they share as Kings in a world of normal humans.

The series beautifully combines the mystery of the Colorless King and combat with describing parts of the world to the audience.  It also captures the feeling of being caught up in a situation well beyond ones abilities and the implications of power on those who have it and those who do not.

I would suggest this series to anyone who enjoys high tension mysteries and likes watching multiple plots cross amongst each other.  There is also a movie called K: Missing Kings which is a sequel to the series.
