Meandering Mondays: Geek Life: Part 3 Quidditch

Greetings, for the last few weeks I've been covering each of the organizations and have covered HVZ and Gaming Club.  This week's group is the URI Qudditch team the Rhody Ridgebacks.

The primary activity of the group is playing quidditch which is based on the game from the Harry Potter series.  The game is played by roughly the same rules as the books minus the magic with a few changes.  Each team consists of 7 players spread amongst 4 roles with a single additional player called the snitch.  Each player other than the snitch plays the entire game holding a broom between their legs with one hand.  The main portion of the game is played by the 3 chasers on each team who are trying to throw a ball into one of the goal hoops of the other team which are protected by the keeper who is basically a goalie.  Each successful goal is worth 10 points.  The next player type are the 2 beaters on each team who throw dodgeballs at the other players and if any player is hit they must immediately stop and run to their own goalpost before they can return to playing.  The final position is the seeker who competes with the other seeker to grab a small tail attached to the snitch player who spends the entire game running away and is the only participant not holding a broom.  The seeker who gets the snitch's tail first gets 30 points for their team and ends the game.  There are additional rules beyond these but my knowledge of them is basic and this should be a sufficient summary.

The team holds practices on weekends and has games against other colleges regularly.  They meet weekly on Wednesday at 7pm in room 360 of the Memorial Union.  In addition to playing the game the club also has a massive social network amongst its members who are very sociable and fun to hang out with.  Basically they tend to be great people to hang out with.

I'll be back next week with a new topic
