The Manga is only 3 volumes. Each containing 4 or 5 "rounds" so it is much shorter than it's anime counterpart. The premise is that Countries rather than having wars. Each pick one Gundam and Pilot and have them fight every 4 years. The winner's country is in charge till the next fights end.
Our Main Character is Domon Kasshu from Neo-Japan, the space colony of Japan(most countries have a space colony where they build the Gundam they use and where most of the people live. Life is better in the colony.
The Manga quickly moves from fight to fight. The anime has some Filler in the case of extra fights.
If you are not a fan of anime but of fighting manga then you will like this. If you don't mind the filler then the anime has more fights scenes to enjoy.
