Meandering Mondays: Magic Theory: One Piece Part 1 Devil Fruit

Hi again everyone this week I'm continuing with my series about how magic works in various anime with One Piece.  While many of the more unatural parts of of the world of One Piece are considered to be completely natural to the world there are a few major elements that are either explicitly supernatural(devil fruit powers) or that work like magic(Haki) and those are going to be the topics for today.  As always warnings for potential SPOILERS AHEAD.

So to start off our discussion of devil fruit powers we'll discuss their common traits.  Devil fruits simply enough provide a unique ability to the person that eats them at the cost of their ability to swim.  Their other unifying traits include tasting absolutely terrible and distinctive swirly patterns on their skins and peels.  Beyond these basic properties each devil fruit is unique with a distinctive shape and grants a specific ability.  Only 1 of each type of fruit exists in the world at a time but once a devil fruit user is killed the fruit will eventually reappear by possessing a fruit of the correct type somewhere in the world.  Also only one person can gain the powers of a fruit since after the first bite the eater gains the ability and the fruit just becomes a terrible tasting fruit.  Upon eating the fruit a person is immediately aware of what power they have gained but does not gain any particular proficiency with the skill.  In a similar vein a person can only have 1 devil fruit power at a time since consuming a second fruit results in death but the exact details of this are unclear.

All devil fruit users share certain weaknesses particularly a weakness to water.  The major downside of eating a devil fruit is that it costs the eater their ability to swim.  If a devil fruit user is submerged in any amount of water they are unable to use their abilities and if submerged deep enough they will become paralyzed.  Since most of the world of One Piece is ocean and the major form of transport is a ship this is a serious weakness but the number of devil fruit users shows that the benefits outweigh this for most people.  In addition to this weakness their is a special kind of stone called kairoseki which nullifies the powers of anyone touching it.  Their other common vulnerability is Haki which I will explain next week.  The only other shared weakness is that the yami yami no mi grants the user the ability to negate the abilities of anyone they touch as long as they remain in contact.

The main feature of any devil fruit is it's ability.  Many devil fruits are known but it is difficult to identify them and there are several that are completely unknown.  As a result eating a devil fruit is a bit of a game of roulette to see what power you get.  The abilities are divided into 3 major classes paramecia, zoan, and logia.  Paramecia are the most common class and grant superpower type abilities and is basically a catch all term for any ability that doesn't fit into the other 2 categories.  Zoan type fruits allow the user to transform into a specific type of animal as well as a hybrid human animal form and are notorious for being the most powerful power type at close combat.  The third type is logia which grants the user the ability to control and turn into an element such as fire or sand, this class is the rarest of the three and is considered to be the most powerful since the ability to turn into an element makes almost all attacks useless.  The overall strength of a devil fruit user is a combination of how powerful their ability is and their skill at using it which means that an incredibly powerful ability does not guarantee victory if the opponent is particularly skillful.  Also worth noting is that due to the strange nature of most devil fruit powers the outcomes of some matches can be rather unexpected.  For example it is shown that the ability to produce wax which is considered relatively weak is extremely effective against the much more powerful ability to become and control poison or a rubber body trumping the ability to become electricity.  In addition many devil fruit abilities require a bit of creativity to use in combat and they way they are used can alter their effectivness.

I hope you all found this interesting and I'll be back next week to talk about Haki the other major power source in the world of One Piece.
