The Weekly W: Wildlife

All of the anime series I have chosen to watch on my own lately have had animals playing recurring roles.  This would not be surprising if it was the premise of the series, however, it just seems to be a side scene.  I have been pleasantly surprised by them.  Let's take a look at some animals in anime!

A few weeks ago, I wrote a review of "Sukitte Ii na yo" a few weeks ago.  This series had the surprised sub-plot regarding a baby kitten.  There were a number of cameos of the kittens, and a good amount of screen time for the cats.

Last fall, I started watching "My Little Monster". I was expecting your standard shoujo romantic comedy.  Which I got.  But there was an added bonus: Nagoya.  Nagoya is THE best character in the show, and even gets a small plot arc.  Not too bad for a chicken.

This spring, the anime club watched Okami-san and her Seven Companions.  This show was really cool (each episode was loosely based on a fairy tale).  The other great thing about it was the appreciation for cute things by the main character.
Kitten Boxing gloves - Sound effects included
We should probably have guessed this about her from the boxing gloves (right) she wears, but it became apparent when we saw this her excitement over Ryoushi's dogs.

Nichijou has a lot of wackiness in every episode.  One of the important characters is Professor, shown here with talking cat, Sakamoto.
The professor, as a young girl, has many interests. Namely: Sharks!

At URI, I was walking along Butterfield Road last spring, and saw something that would make the professor proud.  Someone drew a shark outside of Browning.  If you haven't seen Nichijou, please do.  It's hilarious, the animation is cute, and it's just fantastic.

That's it for this week.  Do you have a favorite anime where animals show up?
